KEEPING OUR CHILDREN SAFE

The most important job we do at Moor End Primary School is keeping our children safe. To do this we have a number of policies and procedures that everyone who comes to our school must follow. Below you will find links to them all. As a school we keep a ‘safeguarding portfolio’ which all staff have read and agreed to follow. We follow Lancashire County Council guidelines and use their ‘Working well with the children and families in Lancashire’  document to decide the level of support our children require. The designated safeguarding lead (DSL) in school is Philip Sumner (Headteacher) who has overall responsibility for safeguarding. We have three back up DSLs: Laura Ridehalgh (Learning Mentor), Hannah Clugston (Deputy Headteacher) and Paula Holdsworth (EYFS lead). All four members of staff are qualified to make decisions regarding the safety of our children. We aim to work closely with families in times of need, and early intervention can reduce social barriers to learning effectively. However, we will also work closely with outside agencies such as family support workers, the police and social workers if we think any of our children are in danger. We make no apologies for making difficult decisions if needed.

Safeguarding governor

At Moor End, we pride ourselves on ensuring safeguarding is of the upmost importance. We are underpinned by three key principles:

  • Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility: all staff, governors and volunteers play their full part in keeping our children safe and protecting them from abuse, neglect and other safeguarding concerns.
  • Moor End operates a child-centred approach: a clear understanding of the needs, wishes, views and voices of children.
  • All staff, governors and volunteers have a clear understanding regarding abuse and neglect in all forms; including how to identify, respond and report. This also includes knowledge in the process for allegations against professionals.

The nominated safeguarding governor is: Mrs L Hartley. Mr B Whitaker is also our online safety governor.

OPERATION ENCOMPASS

We are part of Lancashire's County wide scheme called 'Operation Encompass'. This means that if any incidents occur within the family setting that affects our children, we receive a police notification immediately. This allows us to be prepared for any child coming to school that has potentially involved in a traumatic experience. More information can be found on the link below.

The project, which commenced in April 2019, aims to support children who are affected by domestic abuse.

Following a domestic abuse incident attended by Lancashire Police, at which children from our school were present, Lancashire Police will notify us early the next morning and prior to the start of the school day. This enables us to offer support or whatever is needed to any child arriving at school.

Each school has a member of staff (key adult) who is trained to liaise with the police, when required, whilst ensuring support is available to the child. The adults in our school are Mr. Sumner (DSL) and Laura (Family Support Worker).

We are committed to providing the best possible care and support for all our pupils.  In the meantime, if you would like to speak to someone further about the project or require further information, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Sumner or Laura via the school office on 01254 233312

PREVENT

The aim of ‘Prevent’ is to stop people becoming or supporting terrorists and to do this by challenging ideologies, protecting vulnerable individuals and supporting institutions, such as schools. It is part of the National Counter Terrorism Strategy known as CONTEST.

At Moor End Primary School we believe that children should be given the opportunity to explore the issues of diversity, global awareness and understanding Britain as a multi-cultural society. Providing a safe learning environment in which children can raise controversial questions and concerns without fear of reprimand or ridicule and explore boundaries of what’s acceptable will engender an open attitude to multi-cultural and race issues.

We do this through our PSHE and RE curriculum which aims to foster in children values such as tolerance, understanding, respect and indeed welcome for people from all countries, faiths and backgrounds.

Our school values and Christian beliefs are regularly discussed and revisited in whole school worship, classrooms and termly themes also reinforce this message. We also do this through debate and healthy discussion within a safe learning environment where opinions are valued and challenged in a respectful and informed way.

Staff have received training as part of our safeguarding duties in the recognition of children who may be vulnerable to such extremism. The Designated Senior Lead for Child Protection and deputy Senior Lead; Mr Sumner, Laura, Miss Clugston and Mrs Holdsworth receive additional training for their roles.
