PSHE and RSE information

Parent consultation

We wanted to inform you of an important update regarding our RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) curriculum at our school.

As part of our ongoing commitment to providing a high-quality education and ensuring the well-being of our students, we have recently made changes to our curriculum. We have adopted a new program called KAPOW, which has led to changes in our RSE curriculum. This decision was made to ensure that our RSE curriculum is up-to-date, comprehensive, and in line with the latest guidance and best practices.

We have updated our RSE policy and curriculum resources to align with the changes. These documents are available for you to review on our school website at the following link: PSHE and RSE information | Moor End Community Primary School (secure-primarysite.net)

We believe that RSE is a vital part of our safeguarding offer, as it enables pupils to be informed and ask questions in a safe environment. We value your input and would like to hear your thoughts on our updated RSE curriculum. To facilitate this, we are entering a short period of consultation.

We invite you to provide your feedback through a questionnaire, which can be accessed using the following link: https://forms.office.com/e/ZXfs22AmpL Your feedback is important to us as we strive to continuously improve our curriculum and ensure that it meets the needs of our students and the values of our school community.

Additionally, we understand that you may have questions or would like to explore the resources in more detail. Therefore, we are hosting a session on Monday 11th at 3.00 in the school hall. This will provide you with an opportunity to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of the curriculum resources.

We kindly request that all responses and completed questionnaires be submitted by Friday 15th March. Your participation in this consultation process is greatly appreciated, as it will help us shape and refine our RSE curriculum to better serve our students.

If you have any further questions or concerns regarding the changes to our RSE curriculum or the consultation process, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to support you and address any queries you may have.

Thank you for your continued partnership in your child's education.

PSHE (Personal Social Health and Economic) education and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) at Moor End is a planned programme of learning through which pupils acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. As part of a whole school approach, it develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.

Our PSHE curriculum (Kapow) aims to:

  • increase self-confidence and aspirations
  • learn new skills to support and challenge dreams and aspirations
  • develop personal strengths
  • enhance resilience
  • recognise the need for healthy lifestyles
  • become independent thinkers
  • work collaboratively

We teach 5 themes over the year:

  • Family and Relationships
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Safety and the Changing Body
  • Citizenship
  • Economic Wellbeing
  • Identity (Year 6)

We have categorised our lessons into these five key areas which we return to in each year group. This makes pupil’s prior and future learning clear, showing how the teaching fits into the wider learning journey. Year 6 also have a further key area: Identity.

Kapow Primary’s RSE and PSHE scheme of work has been designed as a spiral curriculum with the following key principles in mind:

  • Cyclical: Pupils revisit the five key areas throughout KS1 and KS2.
  • Increasing depth: Each time a key area is revisited, it is covered with greater depth and increasing maturity.
  • Prior knowledge: Upon returning to each key area, prior knowledge is utilised so pupils can build on previous foundations, rather than starting again.

RSE:
Kapow has a strong focus on emotional and mental health and wellbeing. We want children to be safe, healthy and happy – we understand that children’s safety and wellbeing is paramount. At Moor End, our RSE lessons aim to give children their entitlement to information about relationships, puberty and human reproduction, appropriate to their ages and stages of development. This work is treated in a matter-of-fact and sensitive manner and helps children to cope with change, including puberty, and to learn about healthy relationships.

Our RSE curriculum (Kapow) aims to:

  • To enable young people to understand and respect their bodies, and be able to cope with the changes puberty brings, without fear or confusion.
  • To help young people develop positive and healthy relationships appropriate to their age, development etc. (respect for self and others).
  • To support young people to have positive self-esteem and body image, and to understand the influences and pressures around them.
  • To empower them to be safe and safeguarded.
